In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

A’lay Imran
(3:96) Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah – blessed and a guidance for the worlds.
(3:97) In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.

Ibrahim
(14:35) And when Abraham said, “My Lord, make this city [Makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.
(14:36) My Lord, indeed they have led astray many among the people. So whoever follows me – then he is of me; and whoever disobeys me – indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful.
(14:37) Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.
(14:38) Our Lord, indeed You know what we conceal and what we declare, and nothing is hidden from Allah on the earth or in the heaven.
(14:39) Praise to Allah, who has granted to me in old age Ishmael and Isaac. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.
(14:40) My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.
(14:41) Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established.”

Al-Hajj
(22:26) And when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], “Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.
(22:27) And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass.

Al-Baqarah
(2:125) And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We made a covenant with Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], “Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer].”
(2:126) And [mention] when Abraham said, “My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits – whoever of them believes in Allah and the Last Day.” [ Allah ] said. “And whoever disbelieves – I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination.”
(2:127) And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], “Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.
(2:128) Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
(2:129) Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”
(2:130) And who would be averse to the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself. And We had chosen him in this world, and indeed he, in the Hereafter, will be among the righteous.

(2:189) They ask you about the new moons. Say, “They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj.” And it is not righteousness to enter houses from the back, but righteousness is [in] one who fears Allah. And enter houses from their doors. And fear Allah that you may succeed.

(2:158) Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah . So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.

(2:196) And complete the Hajj and ‘umrah for Allah . But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs ‘umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] – then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.
(2:197) Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do – Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah . And fear Me, O you of understanding.
(2:198) There is no blame upon you for seeking bounty from your Lord [during Hajj]. But when you depart from ‘Arafat, remember Allah at al- Mash’ar al-Haram. And remember Him, as He has guided you, for indeed, you were before that among those astray.
(2:199) Then depart from the place from where [all] the people depart and ask forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
(2:200) And when you have completed your rites, remember Allah like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance. And among the people is he who says, “Our Lord, give us in this world,” and he will have in the Hereafter no share.
(2:201) But among them is he who says, “Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
(2:202) Those will have a share of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in account.
(2:203) And remember Allah during [specific] numbered days. Then whoever hastens [his departure] in two days – there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays [until the third] – there is no sin upon him – for him who fears Allah. And fear Allah and know that unto Him you will be gathered.

(2:217) They ask you about the sacred month – about fighting therein. Say, “Fighting therein is great [sin], but averting [people] from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] al-Masjid al-Haram and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater [evil] in the sight of Allah. And fitnah [mischief] is greater than killing.” And they will continue to fight you until they turn you back from your religion if they are able. And whoever of you reverts from his religion [to disbelief] and dies while he is a disbeliever – for those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein eternally.

Al-Ma’idah
(5:1) O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts. Lawful for you are the animals of grazing livestock except for that which is recited to you [in this Qur’an] – hunting not being permitted while you are in the state of ihram. Indeed, Allah ordains what He intends.
(5:2) O you who have believed, do not violate the rites of Allah or [the sanctity of] the sacred month or [neglect the marking of] the sacrificial animals and garlanding [them] or [violate the safety of] those coming to the Sacred House seeking bounty from their Lord and [His] approval. But when you come out of ihram, then [you may] hunt. And do not let the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Haram lead you to transgress. And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

(5:94) O you who have believed, Allah will surely test you through something of the game that your hands and spears [can] reach, that Allah may make evident those who fear Him unseen. And whoever transgresses after that – for him is a painful punishment.
(5:95) O you who have believed, do not kill game [animals] while you are in the state of ihram. And whoever of you kills it intentionally – the penalty is an equivalent from sacrificial animals to what he killed, as judged by two just men among you as an offering [to Allah] delivered to the Ka’bah, or an expiation: the feeding of needy people or the equivalent of that in fasting, that he may taste the consequence of his deed. Allah has pardoned what is past; but whoever returns [to violation], then Allah will take retribution from him. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.
(5:96) Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers, but forbidden to you is game from the land as long as you are in the state of ihram. And fear Allah to whom you will be gathered.
(5:97) Allah has made the Ka’bah, the Sacred House, standing for the people and [has sanctified] the sacred months and the sacrificial animals and the garlands [by which they are identified]. That is so you may know that Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth and that Allah is Knowing of all things.

(5:100) Say, “Not equal are the evil and the good, although the abundance of evil might impress you.” So fear Allah, O you of understanding, that you may be successful.

As-Saffat
(37:100) My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.”
(37:101) So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.
(37:102) And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, “O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.” He said, “O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.”
(37:103) And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead,
(37:104)
We called to him, “O Abraham,
(37:105)
You have fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
(37:106)
Indeed, this was the clear trial.
(37:107)
And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,
(37:108)
And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations: (37:109) “Peace upon Abraham.”

Al-Hajj
(22:26) And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], “Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.
(22:27) And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass –
(22:28) That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. So eat of them and feed the miserable and poor.
(22:29) Then let them end their untidiness and fulfill their vows and perform Tawaf around the ancient House.
(22:30) That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah – it is best for him in the sight of his Lord. And permitted to you are the grazing livestock, except what is recited to you. So avoid the uncleanliness of idols and avoid false statement.
(22:31) Inclining [only] to Allah, not associating [anything] with Him. And he who associates with Allah – it is as though he had fallen from the sky and was snatched by the birds or the wind carried him down into a remote place.
(22:32) That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of Allah – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.
(22:33)For you the animals marked for sacrifice are benefits for a specified term; then their place of sacrifice is at the ancient House.
(22:34) And for all religion We have appointed a rite [of sacrifice] that they may mention the name of Allah over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. For your god is one God, so to Him submit. And give good tidings to the humble [before their Lord].
(22:35) Who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts are fearful, and [to] the patient over what has afflicted them, and the establishers of prayer and those who spend from what We have provided them.
(22:36) And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols of Allah; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.
(22:37) Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.
(22:38) Indeed, Allah defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful.

Al-Fatah
(48:27) Certainly has Allah showed to His Messenger the vision in truth. You will surely enter al-Masjid al-Haram, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved and [hair] shortened, not fearing [anyone]. He knew what you did not know and has arranged before that a conquest near [at hand].

At-Tauba
(9:19) Have you made the providing of water for the pilgrim and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Haram equal to [the deeds of] one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and strives in the cause of Allah ? They are not equal in the sight of Allah . And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
(9:20) The ones who have believed, emigrated and striven in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives are greater in rank in the sight of Allah . And it is those who are the attainers [of success].

60 – The book of the stories of the Prophets

hadith-4 cover

P.351 No.3364.
Narrated Ibn Abbas [on the authority of the Prophet (peace be upon him)]: The first lady to use a girdle was the mother of Ismail. She uses a girdle so that she might hide her tracks from Sarah.  Abraham (Ibrahim) brought her and her son Ismail while she used to nurse him at her breast, to a place near the Ka’bah under a tree on the spot of Zamzam, at the highest place in the mosque.  During those days there was nobody in Makkah nor was there any water. So he made them sit over there and placed near them a leather bag containing some dates, and a small water-skin containing some water, and set out homeward. Ismail mother followed him saying, “O Abraham (Ibrahim)! Where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no person whose company we may enjoy, nor is there anything (to enjoy)?” She repeated that to him many times, but he did not look back at her.  Then she asked him, “Has Allah ordered you to do so?” He said, “Yes.” She said, “Then He will not neglect us,” and returned while Abraham (Ibrahim) processed onwards, and on reaching the Thaniya where they could not see him, he faced the Ka’bah, and raising both hands, invoked Allah saying the following supplication:

‘O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in an uncultivated valley, by Your Sacred House….. (Quran 14:37)

Ismail’s mother went on suckling Ismail and drinking from the water (she had). When the water in the water-skin had all been used up, she became thirsty and her child also became thirsty.  She started looking at him (i.e. Ismail) tossing in agony.  She left him, for she could not endure looking at him, and found that the mountain of As-Safa was the nearest mountain to her on that land. She stood on it and started looking at the valley keenly so that she might see somebody, but she could not see anybody. Then she descended from As-Safa and when she reached the valley, she tucked up her robe and ran in the valley like a person in distress and trouble, till she crossed the valley and reached Al-Marwa mountain, where she stood and started looking, expecting to see somebody, but she could not see anybody.  She repeated that (running between As-Safa and Al-Marwa) seven times.”

Ibn Abbas said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “This is the source of the tradition of Sa’y (the walking) of people between them (i.e. As-Safa and Al-Marwa).  When she reached Al-Marwa (for the last time) she heard a voice and she asked herself to be quiet and listened attentively. She heard the voice again and said, ‘O, (whoever you may be)! You have made me hear your voice; have you got something to help me?’ And behold! She saw an angel at the place of Zamzam, digging the earth with his heal (or his wing), till water flowed from that place. She started to make something like a basin around it, using her hand in this way, and started filling her water-skin with water with her hands, and the water was flowing out after she had scooped some of it.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, “May Allah bestow His Mercy on the mother of Ismail! Had she not hastened (to fill her water-skin with water from the Zamzam well), Zamzam would have been a stream flowing on the surface of the earth.”  The Prophet (peace be upon him) further added, “Then she drank (water) and suckled her child. The angel said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid of being neglected, for this is the House of Allah which will be built by this boy and his father, and Allah never neglects His people.’ The House (i.e. Ka’bah) at that time was on a high place resembling a hillock, and when torrents came, they flowed to its right and left. She lives in that way till some people from the tribe of Jurhum or a family from Jurhum passed by her and her child, as they were coming through the way of Kada. They landed in the lower part of Makkah where they saw a bird that had the habit of flying around water and not leaving it. They said, ‘This bird must be flying around water, though we know that there’s no water in this valley.’ They sent one or two messengers who discovered the source of water, and returned to inform them of the water. So, they all came (towards the water).”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, “Ismail’s mother was sitting near the water. They asked her, ‘Do you allow us to stay with you?’ She replied, ‘Yes, but you will have no right to possess the water.’ They agreed to that.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) further said, “Ismail’s mother was pleased with the whole situation as she used to love to enjoy the company of the people. So, they settled there, and later on they sent for their families who came and settled with them so that some families became permanent residents there. The child (i.e. Ismail) grew up and learnt Arabic from them and (his virtues)caused them to love and admire him as he grew up, and when he reached the age of puberty they made him marry a woman from amongst them. After Ismail’s mother had died, Abraham (Ibrahim) came after Ismail’s marriage in order to see his family that he had left long ago, but he did not find Ismail there. When he asked Ismail’s wife about him, she replied, ‘He has gone in search of our livelihood.’ Then he asked her about their way of living and their condition, and she replied, ‘We are living in misery; we are living in hardship and destitution,’ complaining to him. He said, ‘When your husband returns, convey my salutations to him and tell him to change the threshold of the gate (of his house).’ When he came, he seemed to have felt something unusual, so he asked his wife, ‘Has anyone visited you?’ She replied, ‘Yes, an old man of so-and-so description came and asked me about you and I informed him, and he asked about our state of living, and I told him that we were living in hardship and poverty.’ On that Ismail said, ‘Did he advise you anything?’ She replied, ‘Yes, he told me to convey his salutation to you and to tell you to change the threshold of your gate.’ Ismail said, ‘It was my father, and he has ordered me to divorce you. Go back to your family.’ So, Ismail divorced her and married another woman from amongst them (i.e. Jurhum). Then Abraham (Ibrahim) stayed away from them for a period as long as Allah wishes and called on them again but did not find Ismail. So he came to Ismail’s wife and asked her about Ismail. She said, ‘He has gone in search of our livelihood.’ Abraham (Ibrahim) asked her, ‘Hoe are you getting on?’ asking her about their sustenance and living. She replied, ‘We are prosperous and well-off (i.e. we have everything in abundance).’ Then she thank Allah. Abraham (Ibrahim) asked, ‘What kind of food do you eat?’ She said, ‘Meat ‘ He said, ‘What do you drink?’ She said, ‘Water’. He said, ‘O Allah! Bless their meat and water.'”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, “At that time they did not have grain, and if they had grain, he would have also invoked Allah to bless it.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, “If somebody has only these two things as his sustenance, his health and disposition will be badly affected, unless he lives in Makkah.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, “Then Abraham (Ibrahim) said to Ismail’s wife, ‘When your husband comes, give my regards to him and tell him that he should keep form the threshold of his gate.’ When Ismail came back, he asked his wife, ‘Did anyone call on you?’ She replied, ‘Yes, a good looking old man came to me,’ so she praised him and added: ‘He asked about you and I informed him, and he asked about our livelihood and I told him that we were in a good condition.’ Ismail asked her, ‘Did he give you any piece of advice?’ She said, ‘Yes, he told me to give his regards to you and ordered that you should keep firm the threshold of your gate.’ On that Ismail said, ‘It was my father, and you are the threshold (of the gate). He has ordered me to keep you with me.’ Then Abraham (Ibrahim) stayed away from them for a period as long as Allah wishes, and called on them afterwards. He saw Ismail under a tree near Zamzam, sharpening his arrows. When he saw Abraham (Ibrahim), he rose up to welcome him (and they greeted each other as a father does with his son or a son does with his father). Abraham (Ibrahim) said, ‘O Ismail! Allah has given me an order.’ Ismail said, ‘Do what your Lord has ordered you to do.’ Abraham (Ibrahim) asked, ‘Will you help me?’ Ismail said, ‘I will help you.’ Abraham (Ibrahim) said, ‘Allah has ordered me to build a house here, pointing to a hillock higher than the land surrounding it.'” The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, “Then they raised the foundation of the House (i.e. the Ka’bah). Ismail brought the stones and Abraham (Ibrahim) was building, and when the walls became high, Ismail brought this stone and put it for Abraham (Ibrahim) who stood over it and carried on building, while Ismail was handing him the stones, and both of them were saying:

‘…Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.’ (Quran 2:127)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, “Then both of them went on building and going round the Ka’bah saying: ‘…Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.’ (Quran 2:127)

P.360 No.3368
Narrated Aishah, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him): Allah’s Messenger said (to her). “Don’t you see that when your folk built the Ka’bah, they did not build it on all the foundations built by Abraham (Ibrahim)?”  I said, “O Allah’s Messenger! Why don’t we rebuild it on the foundations of Abraham (Ibrahim)?” He said, “But for the fact that your folk have recently given up infidelity1 (I would have done so).”
Narrated Ibn Umar: Aishah must have heard this from Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) for I see that Allah’s Messenger used not to touch the two corners facing Al-Hijr only because the House (the Ka’bah) had not been built on the foundation of Abraham (Ibrahim).

  1. They will not be ready to accept the idea of demolishing and rebuilding the Ka’bah.

P.345 No.3351
Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (peace be upon him) entered Ka’bah and found in it the pictures of (Prophet) Abraham (Ibrahim) and Mary (Maryam).  On that he said, “What is the matter with them (i.e. Quraish)? They have already heard that angels do not enter a house in which there are pictures; yet this is the picture of Abraham (Ibrahim).  And why is he depicted as practicing divination by arrows?”

P.345 No.3352
Narrated Ibn Abbas: When the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw pictures in the Ka’bah, he did not enter it till he ordered them to be erased.  When he saw (the picture of) Abraham (Ibrahim) and Ismail having the Azlam (arrows of divination) in their hands he said, “May Allah curse them (i.e. the Quraish)! By Allah, neither Abraham (Ibrahim) or Ismail practiced divination by arrows.”

P.359 No.3366
Narrated Abu Dhar: I said, “O Allah’s Messenger! Which mosque was first built on the surface of the earth?”  He said, “Al-Masjid-Al-Haram (at Makkah).” I said, “Which (was built) next?” He replied, “Al-Masjid-al-Aqsa (at Jerusalem).”  I said, “What was the period of construction between the two?”  He said, “Forty years.”  He added, “Wherever (you maybe, and) the prayer time becomes due, perform the prayer (Salat) there, for the best thing is to do so [i.e. to offer the Salat (prayer) in time].

P.359 No.3367
Narrated Anas bin Malik: When the mountain of Uhud came in the sight of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) he said, “This is a mountain that loves us and is loved by us. O Allah! Abraham (Ibrahim) made Makkah a sanctuary, and I make (the area) in between these two mountains (of Al-Madina) a sanctuary.”
